Innovate UK invests in our inclusive retail solution

We're thrilled to announce that StyleAbility has secured funding from Innovate UK 'New Innovators in Digital Technology, North East England' program. This grant marks a significant milestone in our mission to transform the fashion retail landscape, making it more inclusive and accessible for all.

The Challenge: Fashion's Forgotten Shoppers

For decades, the fashion industry has focused on mainstream audiences, overlooking millions of potential consumers whose needs and preferences differ from the ‘norm’. People with disabilities, as well as aging consumers, often face challenges in finding clothing that meets both their functional needs and personal style. From inaccessible websites and poorly described products to a lack of size inclusivity and easy dressing features, these shoppers encounter barriers that exclude them from enjoying a seamless fashion experience.

The "purple pound" – the spending power of disabled households – is estimated at £274 billion per year in the UK alone, while the global market value is projected at an astounding $8 trillion. This demonstrates not only the ethical imperative of inclusion but also the enormous financial opportunity for businesses that cater to this underserved market. Moreover, research shows that 80% of disabled customers are willing to pay more for products that meet their needs, underscoring the commercial viability of inclusion in fashion.

Our Vision: An Innovative Platform for Inclusive Fashion

With this funding we are building a platform that aims to radically improve the online shopping experience for these underserved consumers. By focusing on accessibility, usability, and personalization, our platform will leverage advanced technology such as AI, detailed product descriptions, and user-generated content to provide an informative, empowering, and tailored shopping experience.

Research shows that 71% of consumers with disabilities abandon an online shopping experience if the website is difficult to navigate. We are determined to solve this by implementing inclusive design principles and improving the quality of information available to ensure every customer feels represented and confident in their purchases.

Benefits for Shoppers and Retailers Alike

For shoppers, our platform will offer detailed product information, accessible interfaces, and reviews that reflect diverse body types, abilities, and preferences, empowering users to make more informed decisions. The emotional impact of inclusive shopping cannot be understated—fashion is a form of self-expression, and everyone deserves to feel confident in their choices.

Retailers stand to gain substantially by tapping into this growing and underserved market. Those who invest in inclusive fashion not only expand their customer base but also strengthen their brand’s reputation for social responsibility. Studies show that 86% of millennials prefer to support brands that align with their values, with inclusivity ranking high among their priorities. By embracing inclusivity, retailers can differentiate themselves and drive customer loyalty.

Looking Ahead: The Future of Inclusive Fashion

As we embark on this exciting journey, we envision a future where fashion is truly accessible to everyone, regardless of age, ability, or size. We’re grateful for the support from the UK Government, and excited to contribute to digital innovation in the North East, and the transformation of the retail sector in the UK and beyond.

Stay tuned for updates, or drop us a line - info@styleability.co.uk - if you’d like to learn more about our solution. Together we can create a fashion industry that welcomes and celebrates all individuals, turning inclusivity into a standard rather than an exception.
